A PISCICULTURA NO BRASIL: UM ESTUDO SOBRE A PRODUÇÃO E COMERCIALIZAÇÃO DE “OREOCHROMIS NILOTICUS” AgEcon
Pizaia, Marcia Goncalves; Camara, Marcia Regina Gabardo da; Santana, Maria Aparecida; Alves, Rozane.

A PRELIMINARY ECONOMIC ASSESSMENT OF ROUNDUP READY SOYBEANS IN MISSISSIPPI AgEcon
Couvillion, Warren C.; Kari, Fatimah; Hudson, Darren; Allen, Albert J..
The advent of genetically altered seed has had a revolutionary effect on the cotton, soybean, and corn seed industries. The basic premise for the use of these seed are to reduce costs through lower applications of chemicals and savings on trips through the field, thus, lowering production costs. Seed companies, however, charge a premium and a fee for use of the seed. This paper compares the costs associated with conventional and roundup ready soybeans. Data were collected from the ACost of Production@ survey of Mississippi producers that is administered by Mississippi State University through the National Agricultural Statistics Service. The survey is a random sample of producers fields that allows for a derivation of the cost of production for each field....

A Review of Milk Production in Bangladesh with Particular Emphasis on Small-Scale Producers AgEcon
Hemme, Torsten; Garcia, Otto; Khan, A.R..
The purpose of the study is to assess the economics of dairy farming in Bangladesh and the prospects for improving the dairy income for small-scale producers, which currently form the backbone of the dairy industry. The document begins with a general overview of milk production in the country, followed by a detailed study of dairy farming in the in the northern district of Sirajganj. The study applies a method of farm-level economic analysis developed by the International Farm Comparison Network (IFCN) which is based on the concept of ‘'typical farms’'. Three farm types were identified as ‘'typical'’ in the district and were subjected to detailed analysis: A two cow farm with 0.4 ha of land, a ten cow farm with 1.6 ha of land and a 25 cow farm with 1.8 ha...

Characteristics and Production Costs of U.S. Corn Farms, 2001 AgEcon
Foreman, Linda F..
Corn production costs per bushel vary considerably among U.S. producers, depending on yields, farm location, tillage practices, irrigation, previous field usage, enterprise size, and weather. In 2001, the operating and ownership costs per bushel for corn ranged from an average of $1.08 for the 25 percent of U.S. producers with the lowest costs to an average of $2.98 for the 25 percent with the highest costs. Heartland corn producers had the lowest costs per bushel on average. Corn producers with small corn enterprises had the highest costs due to their lower-than-average corn yields. Operators of part-time and low-sales corn farms have higher production costs per bushel than operators of farms with higher sales. In 2001, 59 percent of corn producers earned...

Characteristics, Costs, and Issues for Organic Dairy Farming AgEcon
McBride, William D.; Greene, Catherine R..
Organic milk production has been one of the fastest growing segments of organic agriculture in the United States in recent years. Despite the growing number of organic dairy operations, the characteristics of organic dairy operations and the relative costs of organic and conventional milk production have been difficult to analyze. This study, using 2005 ARMS data for U.S. dairy operations, which include a targeted sample of organic milk producers, examines the structure, costs, and challenges of organic milk production. The analysis addresses economies of size, regional differences, and pasture use in organic milk production and compares organic and conventional milk production costs. The findings suggest that economic forces have made organic operations...

Comparison of Hedging Cost with Other Variable Input Costs AgEcon
Riley, John Michael; Anderson, John D..
Recent spikes in commodity prices have led to higher margin amounts and option premiums. For the most part, producers have always attributed their lack of use in reducing risk via futures and options markets to the high cost associated with the use of these markets. This study determines the relative costs of hedging with futures and options and compares these with the costs of other variable inputs. We find that with the exception of hedging corn with both tools and soybeans with options the costs of hedging has only increased at roughly the same rate as all other inputs.

Economic comparison of tillage and planting operations in three tillage systems CIGR Journal
Akbarnia, A.; Farhani, F.; Heidary, B..
To study the economy of tillage operations and present suitable systems for land preparation and planting, costs of execution of three different tillage operations in irrigated wheat crop were compared for three successive years.  The three systems include: conventional or maximum tillage (Max-till), reduced tillage (Red-till) using multitask machine, and using direct planting machinery to represent the no-tillage case (No-till).  Costs were composed of rental cost of tractor, the used implements, multitask machine and direct planting machine.  For each case, data were compared and analyzed in randomized block design.  The variance of wheat yield in the three tillage systems was significant at the 1% level.  Total costs per hectare were 109 and 78 and 46...

Economic Viability of Tomato Cultivation in Organic Farming System BABT
Santos Neto,José dos; Schwan-Estrada,Kátia Regina Freitas; Sena,José Ozinaldo Alves de; Telles,Tiago Santos.
ABSTRACT The aim of the present study is to evaluate the economic viability of tomato cultivation in a system of organic farming, and to compare it with the conventional farming system. The fixed and variable costs of both cultivation systems were calculated, as well as the costs of disease control with the application of alternative products and pesticides. The revenues were computed using commercial production and the direct sales price. The total cost per area was higher in the conventional system, while the cost per plant was greater in the organic system, since it used a lower plant population density. In the conventional system, 2.33 times more was spent on plant management, due to the fact that the number of sprayings was greater than that carried...

Elements sur les investissements et les couts de production de la petite peche non chalutiere bigoudene ArchiMer
Girard, Sophie.
A classification of non trawling small fishing boats of the Guilvinec port synthesizes a first desc ription study. The characteristics used for this typology are the number of labour and the fishing gear. The analysis of the income and the investment allows for an estimate of the differences in productivity and in capital intensity among the small-scale fisheries. Then, the analysis of a survey on the production costs deals mainly with the remuneration of labour in the artisanal fisheries.

GETREIDEPRODUKTION IN DER UKRAINE -- EINE KOMPARATIVE ANALYSE VON PRODUKTIONSKOSTEN AgEcon
Einax, Christian; Lissitsa, Alexej; Parkhomenko, Sergiy.
The following Discussion Paper aims to analyse the development path and profitability of grain production in Ukraine, which is one of the most important production branches of most Ukrainian agricultural companies. Methodologically, individual farm analysis and horizontal farm comparison are used. The cost benefit analysis has been widely used for farm analysis of the agricultural sector in market economies. However, only few applications could be observed in agribusiness research in Ukraine in the last years, presumably because of missing or unreliable data. Thus, the goal of this paper is to apply a standard farm management instrument for enterprise analyse in agriculture of a transition country. The results show small differences in production costs...

The Economics of Milk Production in Orissa, India, with particular Emphasis on Small-scale Producers AgEcon
Saha, Amit; Garcia, Otto; Hemme, Torsten.
The purpose of the study is to assess the economics of dairy farming in the state of Orissa, one of the poorest states in India, and to evaluate the prospects for improving the dairy income for small-scale producers, which currently form the backbone of the dairy industry. The study applies a method of economic analysis developed by the International Farm Comparison Network (IFCN) which is based on the concept of ‘typical farms’. Three broad farm types were selected to represent 'typical farms' in the state: farms stall feeding two dairy animals (buffalo or local cattle), representing the most common farm type found in the state, farms with six dairy animals, located in peri-urban areas benefiting from good market access, and rural farms practicing a form...
